Greenhouse gases - The battle against climate change
During the 1990s, Rhodia became aware of the significance impact greenhouse gas emissions can have on the environment. As a result, we committed to reducing our emissions in France by 30 percent over the period from 1990 to 2010.
The company made considerable investments which have resulted in reduced emissions from its Chalampé (France) site by more than 20 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.
On the global stage, Rhodia installed, in 2007, the same emissions reduction technology on sites in Paulinia, Brazil and Onsan, South Korea under the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism. With 23 percent of the certified emission reductions issued worldwide in 2007, Rhodia has become one of the first contributors to implement this section of the Kyoto Protocol.
orbeo: leading expertise on the emission credit market
Capitalizing on its expertise in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and optimizing the use of its emission credit portfolio, the Group joined forces with Société Générale in 2006 to create orbeo.
The orbeo company is a unique joint venture, combining industrial and financial expertise covering the entire carbon chain. Upstream, via origination, orbeo identifies and develops projects to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases within and outside the company and downstream, trades its credits worldwide.
Its expertise has been recognized by several prestigious awards. Environmental Finance named it best trading company for credits from the Kyoto Protocol’s project-based mechanisms, and awarded the company second prize in the category of best trading company for European ETS allowances.
