Rhodia Energy Services is in charge of energy supply management and production for Rhodia and several third parties, and for managing projects initiated by the company for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.
The enterprise develops gas emissions reduction projects in the framework of Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) as set out by the Kyoto Protocol. We promote these projects through orbeo , the joint venture organization owned by Rhodia and Société Générale, one of the largest financial services groups in Europe, which is dedicated to the trading of carbon credits (CER). Rhodia’s market share of issued CER worldwide in 2007 was 23.4 percent.
In 2007, Rhodia Energy Services initiated a new project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to the production of nitric acid. This project, developed as part of the Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol, should make it possible to obtain a reduction of approximately 80,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents per year, between 2008 and 2012.
Control of energy costs is largely dependent on the adaptation of an integrated approach to purchasing, industrial processes and markets optimization. Rhodia Energy Services was one of the founders of Exeltium, a consortium comprising some of France’s most electro-intensive companies. Exeltium has signed a 15-year electricity supply contract with EDF, with prices indexed to nuclear energy prices.
At the core of the process, the method for measuring emissions was developed by Rhodia Energy Services and registered in February 2005. Since its introduction in 2007, and over the seven-year lifespan of these projects, the Group has developed a methodology that allows it to measure savings and issue credits. Rhodia obtained and then sold 13.4 million tonnes of CO2 credits in 2007.
Rhodia announced in July 2009 its first business development investment in biogas technology, by acquiring Econcern Group’s participation in six pilot biogas production projects located in China and Vietnam. Anticipating the growth of business opportunities in the biogas sector, Rhodia relies on these early projects to enhance its operational skills and industrial know-how in the renewable energy sector. It also reinforces the Group’s commitment to develop greenhouse gas emission reduction technologies.
